She’s best known as the talented writer behind some of television’s most beloved shows, and her work on Girlfriends earned her both an NAACP Image Award and a BET Comedy Award—major milestones in her impressive career. Over the years, she also lent her creative voice to other popular series like South Central, Moesha, and The Jamie Foxx Show, solidifying her place in the entertainment industry. Before all the accolades, though, she was just a driven young woman from Kansas City. She attended Raytown South High School in Missouri, where her journey began, and later went on to earn a journalism degree from the prestigious Northwestern University in Illinois. Though she was born in Los Angeles, it was in Kansas City that she spent her formative years, growing up in a Muslim household that deeply influenced her values and worldview. Her personal life took a meaningful turn when she married Salim Akil, a Sufi Muslim director, and together they built a loving family. The couple welcomed their first son, Yasin, in 2007, followed by Nasir in 2009—moments that brought even more joy to her already fulfilling life. Through her writing, her faith, and her role as a mother, she continues to inspire many.
Starting back in 2009, she became part of the production and writing teams for ABC’s Cougar Town. It was around that time that her contributions began to make a noticeable impact on the show. She really brought a unique voice to the series, helping shape its tone and direction over the seasons. Her involvement with Cougar Town marked a significant chapter in her career, establishing her as a key creative force behind the scenes. Throughout her time on the show, she consistently demonstrated strong storytelling instincts and collaborative spirit. And as the years went by, her role only grew more integral to the team.
