Laufey is a popular jazz singer-songwriter and cellist who has been making waves in the music world with her soulful voice and unique blend of classical and modern influences. Laufey first gained attention in 2014 when she competed as a finalist on Iceland’s Got Talent, showcasing her talent at an early stage. Fast forward to 2020, Laufey released her debut single, “Street by Street,” which marked the beginning of her journey into the global music scene. The following year, in 2021, she dropped her debut EP, further solidifying her presence as a rising artist. Then, in 2022, Laufey released her first full-length album, Everything I Know About Love, a deeply personal project that resonated with fans around the world.
Before all the fame, Laufey—whose full name is Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir—was already deeply immersed in music. She started studying classical piano and cello at just four years old, and throughout her childhood, she earned numerous awards and accolades in various competitions. With a rich cultural background, Laufey is half Icelandic and half Chinese, a duality that often shines through in her artistry. She shares a special bond with her twin sister, Junia, who has also been part of her creative journey.
Laufey’s passion for music was nurtured early on, inspired largely by her mother, a classical violinist, whose influence helped shape her musical foundation. Additionally, her father’s love for legendary jazz icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday played a big role in guiding Laufey toward the genre that now defines her sound. Through dedication, heritage, and heartfelt inspiration, Laufey continues to carve out a distinctive path in contemporary jazz and beyond.
She first stepped into the spotlight as a solo cellist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra when she was just 15 years old—a remarkable achievement that set the tone for her musical journey. She, of course, continued to rise, showing incredible dedication and talent. Thanks to her hard work, she earned a prestigious Presidential scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music, where she further honed her craft. She truly stood out among her peers, and her passion for music only grew stronger with each passing year.
