Before achieving stardom in professional golf, he made a name for himself in the collegiate ranks, being named an All-American at Wake Forest University in 1970 — the same year he captured the prestigious U.S. Amateur title. His brother, Bobby Wadkins, also carved out a solid career on the PGA Tour, competing from 1975 all the way through 1998.
