She’s a dedicated lawyer and politician who made history by winning the race for Dallas’ 30th Congressional District, stepping into the role of U.S. representative in 2023 after the retirement of longtime representative Eddie Bernice Johnson. Her journey in public service began earlier, though—she previously served with distinction in the Texas House of Representatives, representing the 100th district. Throughout her career, she has remained a steadfast member of the Democratic Party, showing deep commitment to progressive values. In fact, she’s not just a participant but a founding member and vice chair of the Texas Progressive Caucus, playing a key leadership role. Additionally, she’s contributed significantly as treasurer of the Texas Caucus on Climate, Energy, and Environment, highlighting her focus on sustainability and environmental justice.

Before rising to national prominence, she built a strong foundation through education and early career experiences. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Rhodes College in 2003, then went on to pursue her Juris Doctor at the University of Houston Law Center, graduating in 2006. From there, she dove into impactful legal work, serving as a civil rights attorney and public defender—roles that shaped her passion for equity and justice. Eventually, she established her own law firm, demonstrating both entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community advocacy.

Family has always played an important role in her life. Her father, a teacher and preacher, instilled strong moral and educational values, while her mother, a dedicated worker with the United States Postal Service, modeled perseverance and public service. All of these experiences—personal, professional, and political—have defined her path and continue to guide her work today.
