Issa Rae was born in Los Angeles in 1985 and spent a brief period living in Dakar, Senegal, before growing up primarily in Maryland. She remained there until the sixth grade, at which point her family relocated back to Los Angeles. Continuing her education, Issa Rae attended Stanford University, where she majored in African and African-American Studies and graduated in 2007. During her time in college, she was deeply involved in the arts, producing music videos and developing a mock reality series titled “Dorm Diaries.”
In 2008, a friend began referring to her as Issa Rae, and she ultimately decided to adopt the name professionally for her creative pursuits. Following graduation, she received a theater fellowship at The Public Theater in New York and started taking film classes to further hone her craft. Inspired by an article that discussed the lack of African-American “geeks” in mainstream media, Issa Rae created “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” which debuted on YouTube in 2011 and ran through 2013.
For the first season of the show, she worked alongside her friend Tracy Oliver, who both produced and acted in the series. The initial response was overwhelmingly positive, prompting the two to launch a Kickstarter campaign that successfully raised over $50,000 to fund additional episodes. As the show gained traction, Issa Rae partnered with Pharrell Williams, who hosted the second season on his YouTube channel, iamOther. In 2012, the series was honored with the Shorty Award for Best Web Show and concluded its run in early 2013.
In 2015, Issa Rae expanded her creative footprint by publishing a memoir titled The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. The following year, she brought her talents to the small screen in a major way by starring in and producing the critically acclaimed HBO series “Insecure,” which premiered in 2016 and has continued to earn praise in the years since. Between seasons of the show, Issa Rae also appeared in the well-received drama “The Hate U Give” in 2018, further solidifying her presence across multiple entertainment platforms.
When it comes to Issa Rae’s most acclaimed work, many fans and critics alike point to Dark City Beneath the Beat (2020) as her highest rated project. Issa Rae truly showcased her storytelling depth in that film, bringing a unique voice to the screen. Over the years, audiences have come to appreciate the way Issa Rae blends culture and narrative, and this 2020 release stands out as a highlight in her career. On the other hand, Gray Matter (2023) received a more mixed response, making it one of the lower rated entries in Issa Rae’s filmography. While Issa Rae continues to take on bold and meaningful roles, not every project resonates equally—still, her influence and dedication remain undeniable.
