Ben, a founding member of the indie folk band Lord Huron, originally envisioned the project as a solo endeavor before it evolved into the full-fledged group that fans know today. Ben’s creative journey began in his hometown of Okemos, Michigan, where he first started writing music during his early years. From there, Ben pursued his passion for the arts by attending the University of Michigan to study visual art—a path that eventually led him overseas to complete his degree in France.
After finishing school, Ben moved to New York City, working as an artist and further honing his craft. Then, in 2005, Ben made a pivotal move to Los Angeles, California, where the idea for Lord Huron truly began to take shape. Under Ben’s direction, the band released their acclaimed debut album, Lonesome Dreams, followed by the equally resonant Strange Trails.
Outside of music, Ben shares a close bond with his family—he has three siblings, making four children in total. Throughout it all, Ben has remained a central figure in shaping Lord Huron’s distinctive sound and storytelling aesthetic.
He had always been passionate about art, so he studied to become a painter. Over time, he found himself doing some art direction work here and there—just enough to pay the bills while staying connected to his creative roots. He never lost sight of his original dream, though. Even when juggling projects, he made sure to keep painting, because that’s who he truly was. He believed in balancing practicality with passion, and in his case, it meant using his skills in art direction to support his deeper calling. He knew the path wasn’t always easy, but he stayed committed, one brushstroke at a time.
