She is a freelance journalist and the writer behind the widely read Substack newsletter “Bad Brain.” Known for her honest and heartfelt reflections on grief, she has shared her personal journey of navigating adulthood after the loss of her partner, which has deeply resonated with many. This openness has helped her grow her Instagram following to over 50,000 on her account, offbeatorbit.
Before she became well-known, she started writing as a teenager, posting some of her earliest work on her LiveJournal account. She later pursued a formal education in journalism, graduating from Howard University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Print and Online Journalism. She joined Instagram back in July 2011, long before it became a major platform for her work and personal storytelling.
In her personal life, she shares her home with a cat named Walter. Her late husband, Rob Stengel, passed away from Peritoneal Mesothelioma in December 2022—a loss she has written about with both vulnerability and strength on her blog, Bad Brain.
She previously worked as a contract writer for Netflix and spent four years as a staff writer for the publication Jezebel.
